Overview

Chateau Lynch Bages is a well-known winery located in Pauillac, Bordeaux. The estate has a terroir of gravel, chalk, and sand soils, planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The vineyard is divided into 140 separate parcels and can be split into 4 main blocks. The wine is best when it’s concentrated, offering ripe cassis, tobacco, wet earth, and truffle flavors with firm tannins. The annual production is close to 35,000 cases that can be produced in a good vintage.

Winemaking Techniques

For the vinification of their white, Bordeaux wine, Blanc de Lynch-Bages is vinified in a combination of 50% new, French oak barrels, 20% in one-year-old barrels, and the remaining 30% is vinified in vats. The red wine is aged in an average of 70% new, French oak barrels for between 12 and 15 months.

Storage and Serving Temperatures

Chateau Lynch Bages needs time in the cellar before it can truly be enjoyed, as the wine is quite powerful and tannic in its youth. Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 2-4 hours, or more. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau Lynch Bages is usually better with at least 10-15 years of bottle age. Of course, that can vary slightly, depending on the vintage character. The wine is best served at 15.5°C to 18°C.

Food Pairing

Chateau Lynch Bages pairs well with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised and grilled dishes, and stews, rice, pasta with meat sauces, mushrooms, cheese, and bread.
