Terroir, Vineyard, and Location

Chateau Haut Bages Liberal is located in Pauillac, Bordeaux and has a widely dispersed vineyard, with its best terroir being situated on one of the better elevations in the entire Pauillac appellation. They have vines not far from Chateau Latour in St. Lambert, as well as parcels on the plateau of Bages. The terroir consists of gravel on chalk, clay, and limestone soils.

Wine Characters and Styles

Chateau Haut Bages Liberal produces wine with 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. The wine is aged in 40% new, French oak barrels for between 14 to 18 months, depending on the character of the vintage. 20% of the wine is aged in amphora, starting from 2018 vintage. It is certified as organic and biodynamic in 2019.

Wine-making Techniques

The wine is vinified in 32 temperature-controlled tanks that are divided into 16 stainless steel tanks and 16 cement vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tank and vat.

Chateau Haut Bages Liberal is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Decanting Time

Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 2-3 hours, give or take. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment.
