Chateau Margaux Overview

Chateau Margaux is a First Growth wine estate located in the Bordeaux region of France. The vineyard is planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc for the red wine grapes. 11 hectares of vines planted to 100% Sauvignon Blanc are located west of the chateau, devoted to the production of the white Bordeaux wine of Chateau Margaux, Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux.

The style of wine produced by Chateau Margaux at its best, blends elegance, purity of fruit, harmony, and finesse. The wine is rich, full-bodied, and offers cassis, truffle, and haunting scents of violets. The best vintages of Chateau Margaux are 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2000, 1999, 1996, 1995, 1990, 1989, 1986, 1985, 1983, 1982, 1959, 1953, 1929, 1928, 1921, and 1900.

To produce the red wine of Chateau Margaux, vinification takes place in vats that are a combination of wood and stainless steel. The vats range in size from 5 hectoliters up to 180 hectoliters, which are for the blending. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vats. The red wine of Chateau Margaux is aged in 100% new oak for 18-24 months, depending on the quality and character of the Bordeaux vintage.

The optimal storage temperature for Chateau Margaux is 55°F (13°C) and the optimal serving temperature is 60-64°F (16-18°C). Decanting time varies depending on the vintage, but on average 2-3 hours of decanting is recommended. Chateau Margaux pairs well with meats such as beef, lamb, and game, as well as with hard and soft cheeses.
